Shrien Dewani: The Spoof Twitter Account And SA Tourism

SHRIEN Dewani: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at the murder of Anni Dewani in the news – the spoof Twitter account and how we love a good yarn.

IOL brings news of a spoof Twitter page of a person “purporting to be Shrien Dewani”. It is hideous. Mr Dewani is a suspect in a murder of a young woman on her honeymoon. He remains innocent until the law can prove otherwise. One message trills:

I hope the insurance on my wife pays out soon. Last night I had to stay in and eat a can of beans. It’s no way for a billionaire to act.”

And:

Ben Trovato writes an open letter to Max Clifford, Mr Dewani’s publicist, in the Sunday Times:

Dear Max, Congratulations on doing an excellent job of representing Shrien Dewani, the poor fellow unjustly accused of hiring gunmen to shoot his wife, Anni, in Guguletu last month.

As you said, the whole business stinks of a set-up. It is clearly a conspiracy between the South African government, the police, the prosecutors, the taxi driver, the killers and everyone who lives within 5km of the murder scene. I knew he was innocent the moment he hired you and a lawyer before he was even named as a suspect.

Anni Dewani’s father has been on the phone to the Cape Times. Says Vinod Hindocha from his home in Sweden of Shrien Dewani:

Go to South Africa and do it. Let the world know what happened…If he says proudly that he did not do it, then just go back. Clear the doubts. What’s the big deal? Give us justice. That’s what I ask for. Justice for my daughter who was so lively and innocent.”

He then says something that should boost SA tourism:

When Anni was murdered I was about to cancel the tickets to South Africa. But when I came to SA last week it was like heaven on earth. Thank God we did not cancel those tickets. We will come to Cape Town next year then go on to the Maldives.”

The case moves on apace. Tom Sutcliffe explains why we stare:

To put it bluntly, if Anni Dewani’s murder was a random act of violence by two township thugs, it’s far less engrossing than if it was a pre-planned hit – just as it was more “interesting” for Lindy Chamberlain’s baby to have been sacrificed in a cult ritual than snatched by a feral dog.

Time for a heated debate…
