IT’S time for North Lincolnshire’s 2011 Haxey Hood Game between the hamlets of Haxey and Westwoodside. Dale Smith paints his face black for his role as ‘The Fool’ and gets the game underway on January 6th, known locally as Old Christmas Day.

It’s a veritable fetish fest as the leather ‘hood’ is tossed into the crowd of burley men. The hood is a metre-long length of rubber hose. must not be kicked not thrown forwards. It should be ‘swayed’ to the goal (one of the village’s four pubs). Order is maintained by the Boggins, lead by the chief Boggin.

The winning pub gets to keep the hood until the competition takes place again the following year – by which time almost everyone has sobered up…
