Michaela McAreavey Murder Linked To Anni Dewani

MICHAELA McAreavey has been murdered at the Legends Hotel in Mauritius. She was on her honeymoon. This is grim news. But why is the media interested? Why is Mrs McAreavey on the BBC’s national news and the front page of the Daily Express, taking precedence over the murder of Joanna Yeates?

Well, she was married John McAreavey, a member of Down’s Gaelic football team. He father is Tyrone Gaelic football manager Mickey Harte.

The BBC’s man in Northern Ireland, Mark Simpson, shows us how famous Michaela is by holding aloft a newspaper’s front page and introducing a segment of her on a TV talk show with her dad. Twice Simpson tells us that she was 27. He holds up a copy of the Irish News. He tells us:

“Her wedding made front page news, reflecting just how widely known her family is.”

Well, okay. Nice work, Mark. Her dad is famous enough for the murdered woman to feature on the national news. Simpson then shows us another copy of the paper, a more recent edition.

“But less than two weeks later, the same newspaper is reporting her death. At the age of just 27.”

But even more mawkish than Simpson is the Daily Express, which leader with:

Honeymoon horror as another bride is found murdered

Another bride murdered… on Mauritius? No. the other bride is Annie Dewani, wife of Shrien Dewani. She was murdered in South Africa.

The honeymoon killing comes just two months after bride Anni Dewani, 28, was murdered in a car-jacking on her honeymoon in South Africa.

Her millionaire British husband, Shrien Dewani, 30, was later accused by the couple’s taxi driver of paying him to arrange for hitmen to kill her, but Dewani denies the allegations.

The use of the word “another” makes it appear a trend. One honeymooning bride murdered is a tragedy. Two honeymooning brides murdered is a cult?

Michaela McAreavey has been murdered. It’s a tragic story. But for the BBC and Daily Express it’s not enough…
