Schools Record Language Of Racial And Sexual Abuse: From Nig-Nog Through Mega Peado To Clean Shirt
NEWS is that schools report bad language to education authorities who record the pupil’s name and the words used. Records are maintained to see if the pupil is progressing or stuck in a rut of unimaginative, peer-led abuse.
If 2010 figures are a guide, right now there are just 10,000 primary school children engaging in homophobic or racist in England and Wales. This is well down on 1974, when the one in four primary school children was grasping the nettle of Gaylord and nig-nog; but well ahead of 1949, when the most popular term of abuse was fairy, followed by golliwog and Ten Little Nigger Boys was considered a term of endearment.
Says one educator:
“The files will enable us to keep on top of abuse and be best able to spot it. Terms like noofta, bint, strumpet and brass will no longer be tolerated. Now, I’m off to the dry cleaners to get a clean shirt…”
