The Koran of Kansuh al-Ghuri Is The Future

by | 19th, January 2011

THE Koran of Kansuh al-Ghuri is huge. One day, when the Daily Mail is King, all korans will be this big and believers will be encouraged to carry them about in their pockets…

Collection and research Support Manager Carol Burrows (left), Conservation Intern Elaine Sheldon, centre, and Jamie Robinson, Senior Photographer (right), prepare to photograph the Koran of Kansuh al-Ghuri at The University of Manchester’s John Rylands Library, Manchester.
Picture date: Tuesday January 18, 2011. A rarely seen manuscript of one of the world’s most important copies of the Koran is to be published online. The ornate, hand-written holy book, estimated to be around 500 years old, is so precious and fragile scholars have been unable to put it on display. Each of the 470 pages measures 88x60cm, the size of a large plasma screen TV, and it is kept by the University of Manchester’s John Rylands Library
