Joanna Yeates: Vincent Tabak Is No Robert Murat But He Might Be A Voyeur

by | 22nd, January 2011

JOANNA YEATESVincent Tabak is still helping the police with their enquires. He has not been charged with any crime. But he is front-page news – although this time the media is far more circumspect than in its treatment of Chris Jefferies. But can they amplify the whispers?

Police cannot questions Mr Tabak forever. They have until tonight to continue questioning him.

Meanhwile, the press focus on Mr Tabak’s lover, Tanja Morson.

The Mail leads with news that Mr Tabak had “split with lover”. An unnamed source tell us:

“The last time I saw her [Tanja] was around September. I assumed that they had split up as I hadn’t seen her for so long.”

Assumption is front-page fact?

Another confirmed she had not seen Miss Morson for several months, while a third said: “I’d seen the man but I hadn’t really seen a girlfriend around in the weeks leading up to what happened.”

Can you confirm that you’ve not seen someone you only sometimes see in passing and don’t know?

The Mail’s scoop becomes the Daily Star’s:

“JO MURDER: I’LL STAND BY LOVER”

Adding:

“Suspects’ lover insists he’s innocent”

But the paper has not spoken with Miss Morson. And even if she had have, good for her that she will stand by a man who’s not been charged with committing any crime.

The Mirror leads with:

“COPS SPOKE TO GIRLFRIEND BEFORE ARREST”

So much for the Mail’s theory. It was only yesterday that we reported:

Tanja’s mother, Elisabeth, expressed concern at his welfare, saying: “We saw what happened to the landlord and don’t want to see that happen to our lovely Vincent.”

The Express has more:

Tanja Morson, 34, was at work as normal yesterday despite the arrest of her partner.

In the Telegraph we learn about an Emily Williams, at whose home Mr Tabak had been staying while police swarmed over Joanna Yeates’s home:

Michael Williams, her father, said he was still puzzled by the activity at the building… “Of course I’m worried that her name has been dragged into this but I’m as much in the dark as anyone else. I don’t know anything.”

Miss Williams travelled to Chile shortly after Christmas and is not due to return for another two weeks.

As for the actual case, the Sun says:

“WEEPING GIRL TIPS OFF COPS”

A source said: “The caller said she was moved to tears by what David and Teresa said and felt she had to pass on what she knew.” The information has opened up vital new lines of inquiry for detectives hunting 25-year-old Jo’s killer.

So. The TV appeal works – maybe.

But what about the speculation?

Someone else, who once lived in Tabak’s Clifton flat, said: “There couldn’t be a more secluded building. No one could hear or see anything if you were moving around the back. But I could see someone going past my front window. The flats are sunken, so you could have seen Jo’s legs but she would not know.

No more secluded place on Earth, eh? It’s a good place from which to watch Joanna’s legs, eh? Are we now to suppose that Mr Tabak is a voyeur? Mindful of that, here’s a source talking to the Bristol Evening Post:

The man told the Evening Post: “I was working in my bedroom when I heard a cry – it was not a scream, but it was pretty loud. It sounded like a female voice or young child. I didn’t hear the first word but the next two words were definitely ‘help me’.

“It sounded like an impassioned plea and the impression I got was that it came from the direction of Canynge Road. It was not so much the words that were said that unnerved me but the way they were said.

“I opened the bedroom window and looked out but couldn’t see anything. I then went outside and looked and listened for about 10 seconds but when I didn’t see or hear anything I dismissed it because the pavements were slippy.”

As for actual evidence, well, the Express leads with:

“JOANNA: DNA IS VITAL CLUE”

Saliva was found in three places on her body, under her clothes.
Forensic experts found the samples on the 25-year-old landscape architect’s midriff and breasts and on her jeans.
