In Photos And Slogans: Students And Unions Manchester And London Protests

by | 29th, January 2011

THERE are spasms of violence at the anti-student fees, anti-coalition cuts to public spending in London and Manchester. The mainstream media should enjoy this.

Sky News talks of protestors “throwing bottles and sticks”. The police form the kettle and crank up the temperature. In Manchester, Aaron Porter, the president of the National Union of Students, is surrounded and subjected to anti-Semitic insults. (What is it about the extreme left and their hatred of Jews?)

The BBC does not note the racism, going with Porter being “challenged by demonstrators wanting a more militant leadership”.

Writes Porter:

The vast majority, including myself, believe a moderate approach that engages with political realities while showing our dissent and energising through direct action is the way forward.

The boy’s a dreamer.

In Manchester, Sky’s Mike McCarthy tweets:

NUS presidet Aaron Porter confronted by hostile demonstrators but march good natured. #nus #mancdemo

One protestor carried the banner:

“Ben Ali, Mubarak… Cameron, you are next.”

Another chant was:

“Revolution, revolution.”

But out pick of the slogans is the wag stood by the line of police by Milbank Tower carrying the legend: “Met Police Deprogramming unit.”

That’s one student destined for a bright future in ad sales…
