Raoul Moat: Pc Rathband Is Patronised Outside Court

by | 9th, February 2011

RAOUL Moat, the murdering doorman, continues to make news. Pc David Rathband, who was blinded by Moat, has been giving evidence at the trial of Karl Ness, 26, and Qhuram Awan, 23, who are accused of helping Moat. Both deny all charges against them, including the one that Ness aided the murder of karate instructor Chris Brown.

Over the newswires, the Press Association writes an emotive piece that seems to come from the pages of Hello!:

Today Pc David Rathban, blinded by Moat, was Newcastle Crown Court on the city’s rainswept quayside wearing his immaculately pressed full police uniform…

Pc Rathband was helped from the front passenger seat of a five-door silver Ford Focus…

His greying hair cropped short, the father-of-two took a moment to adjust the buttons on his tunic with his right hand, then took his wife Kath’s arm with his left and walked briskly across the red cobbles towards the court…

Kath, 41, carrying a large black leather handbag and wearing a dark coat and trousers, held him close.

What he had for lunch is not noted.

Pc Rathband is admirable in his reaction to his frightening injuries. But the newswires are to show and not tell. Couching the story in pap sentimentalism does Mr Rathband no favours…
