The Bahrain Google Earth Photos That Sparked A Revolution: Photos

by | 4th, March 2011

THE images you are about to see were circulated in Bahrain at the time of the (so far) failed attempt to overthrow the ruling dynasty. The Government was aware of these images and blocked Google Earth. But the internet will have its way and the pictures were loaded onto a PDF guide and distributed by email.

The NYT’s Tom Friedman says the photos are one of the “not-so-obvious forces” that fed the mass revolt.

The photos of opulence are juxtaposed against those of poverty. It looks yet more unfair. Meanwhile, in the UK, you can search Google Earth for pictures of David Cameron and his wife’s lands, Tony Blair’s country pile, Prince Charles massive Highgrove estate, and all manner of wonderful places owned by the elite. You can then type in “sink estate” and see what the web coughs up.

Ready for the revolution? Or are we too apathetic..?
