Alternative Olympic Sports: Bird Calling

by | 15th, March 2011

TATE Douglas is pulling the birds in Harrisville, Utah. Douglas is the 15-year-old aiming to be the world’s best duck and goose caller. He tells the local paper of that first hunting trip with his dad. Tate was nine:

“He showed me what to do and then I did it better than he did.”

Says dad, Brett Douglas:

“It is true. He is just a natural. He picked it up no problem.”

You can catch Tate at the International Sportsmen’s Exposition March 17-20 in Sandy. And then it’s on to the world championships this Thanksgiving in Stuttgart, Ark.

One Butch Richenback, former world champion and founder of Rich-N-Tone duck calls, adds:

“We do it over the phone. He puts me on speaker and I set down the phone and walk away so it doesn’t crackle.”

There’s a film in this. Someone had best make it.

But here’s the big question: Is bird calling an Alternative Olympic Sport?
