RIP Jack French D.S.M: Remembering HMS Amethyst

FOR some years, Anorak readers have been relating tales of HMS Amethyst.

Reader Charlie writes:

Regretfully we have to announce the Death of Jack French D.S.M.

Jack “Crossed the Bar” 4/5/11. He was the Telegraphist on board Amethyst during The Yangtze Incident April 1949 and was awarded the Distinguish Service Medal.

In the 1957 film “Yangtze Incident” the actor Ray Jackson played the part of ‘Jack French’

One of the greatest welcomes ever given a ship's company was accorded the 150 men of the frigate HMS Amethyst when she docked at Devonport at the end of her 10,000 mile voyage from the Yangtse River, scene of her dramatic escape from Chinese Communists.
