RIP Jack French D.S.M: Remembering HMS Amethyst

FOR some years, Anorak readers have been relating tales of HMS Amethyst.

Reader Charlie writes:

Regretfully we have to announce the Death of Jack French D.S.M.

Jack “Crossed the Bar” 4/5/11. He was the Telegraphist on board Amethyst during The Yangtze Incident April 1949 and was awarded the Distinguish Service Medal.

In the 1957 film “Yangtze Incident” the actor Ray Jackson played the part of ‘Jack French’

British actor Richard Todd playing the role of Lieutenant-Commander John Kernans, the Royal Naval officer who took command of the HMS Amethyst (U16/F116) which was a Modified Black Swan-class sloop, that had been fired upon by Communist forces during the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Todd was appearing in the film "The Yangtze Incident"
