Sir Barnes Wallis, inventor of the bouncing bomb, used in the Lancaster bomber raids on the dams of the Ruhr and Eder Valleys in Germany during the Second World War. The attack was carried out by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, subsequently known as the Dambusters.
