UK Bans Circus Animals: Canada Shoots Dead Cute, Tame Bear Cub

HURRAH! So cheers the Independent from its front page. “Victory in the campaign to ban circus animals.”

MPs of all parties unanimously backed a ban and the Government signalled that it would introduce one, ending forever the days of lions, tigers, elephants and other wild animals in the big top.

Lions and tigers can keep their jobs presenting death and sex shows on the BBC, but they will do so in the grasses of Africa, Spearmint Rhino or wherever it is that circus animals go to be wild. Their handlers can get work herding cats.

So. Good news. And mindful of it we look at the killing of a black bear cub in Canada.

It was put down for being “too friendly” with visitors to the Terra Nova National Park in Newfoundland. Not too friendly as in trying to mate with your sister-in-law (he’s not Ryan Giggs); too firendly as it coming up and looking cute.

Constable Suzanne Bourque was investigating reports of a bear sighting in the area when the cub brushed against her leg while she was interviewing witnesses.  Wildlife officials caught the bear before moving it to a more isolated area, but the animal still returned to a restaurant on the Trans Canada Highway. Kirby Tulk, acting director of conservation with Terra Nova National Park, said he had no choice but to euthanise the cub, after the warnings about not feeding it were ignored.

If only the bear had had a place where it could live with humans and their sweet foods..?
