Sun Buries Itself, David Cameron And Ed Miliband In Drugs Story: Meet Rupert Murdoch’s Tom Baldwin

by | 9th, July 2011

THE Sun’s headline about former News of The World editor Andy Coulson is not “Former News Of The World editor arrested over hacking claims while working for Rupert Murdoch”. No. The Sun’s headline is:

“David Cameron’s former aide quizzed over hacking claims”

The Sun’s focus is on Cameron and not on its sister organ. Why? Well, self-preservation, cynicism, pragmatism and maybe – just maybe – the Sun flexing its muscles. As the Independent puts the same news:

Cameron forced to cut Murdoch and his empire loose as he tries to deflect public anger about failure to tackle the phone-hacking scandal…

The Sun then reminds Cameron of its mighty weight by focusing also on Labour leader Ed Miliband’s head of spin:

Red Ed in quiz over spin doctor’s ‘drug use’

Indeed, this is a desperate and pathetic attempt to spread scandal. Sun hacks are shocked that a man who works with the media might have taken drugs before he got a top job. And  –  yep – that is Tom Baldwin who once worked as  The Times’ Parliamentary Correspondent. And – yep – That is the Times ownded by…Rupert Murdoch.

Do the alleged sins of his past have some bearing on the present – so goes the message. You can hear the brain cogs turning at News International. The paper then enlarges on the headline:

LABOUR leader Ed Miliband was last night asked whether his chief spin doctor had a serious cocaine problem. Tory peer Lord Ashcroft has accused Labour’s Director of Communications Tom Baldwin of having been a heavy abuser of the drug for years in the past.

DRUGS in the LABOUR Party?! Shock horror. Wonder what weed-smoking David Cameron makes of that..?
