Sports Accident Of The Day: Juan Antonio Flecha, Johnny Hoogerland And A Runner’s Unusual Leg

by | 13th, July 2011

ONE reason why we watch sport is for the accidents. It’s not pleasant but it is true. For example, the best bits about Formula One, a sport often akin to watching traffic, are, respectively: the start; the finish; the crash.

The Tour de France is an event where the monotonous procession of men on bicycles is broken by spectacular pile ups. The biggest talking point in this year’s race centres on the television technician’s car that hit Team Sky’s Juan Antonio Flecha. The most viewed footage of the race so far is the driver striking Flecha. We see Flecha fall to the tarmac. Racer Johnny Hoogerland then flies over the Spaniard and into a barbed wire fence. Ouch! That looks nasty. Let’s see it again…

(Does the car driver get the sack or a pat on the back for helping to make good telly?)

Now get a load of the runners calling to the track. That leg look right to you? The last photo is memorable…
