Lancashire Telegraph Stirs Racial Tension Between EDL And Anglo-Asian Footballers

by | 15th, July 2011

THE theory that the English Defence League is an organisation based on the footballer fixture list is augmented by the story of a brawl between 20-25 EDL players and around 30 Asian males. Or was it? The Lancashire Telegraph yells:

EDL and Asians brawled on Blackburn football pitches

The Lancashire Telegraph says the EDL had booked a match on a concrete pitch in Blackburn’s Queens Park, a ground “normally used by Asian youths”.

As we wrestle with the concept of home and away – and what “Asian” youths constitute (not Anglo-Asian, or British Asian) – the paper tells us:

The two groups were playing on adjoining pitches but tempers flared and words were exchanged when the ball from the Asian game went over to the other side.

Nicholas John Smyth, 26, [non Asian] of Sherwood Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to using racially-aggravated threatening behaviour.

He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs.

How did the row occur?

When the EDL game finished, they congregated near the fence separating the two pitches and Smyth started shouting at the Asian male to “come and sort it out”.

So. The EDL have a team?

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Smyth had gone to play football with a few friends. He realised there were members of the EDL there, although he was not a member of the organisation.

The one man who was convicted to fighting is not actually in the EDL.

Can it be deduced that the local Lancashire paper is whipping up racial tensions and looking for trouble?

Wear your colours!
