He is a member of the far-right neo-Nazi Nordisk forum. Breivik sees Israel as a buffer to prevent Islam taking over Europe.

(These whacky neo-Nazis want to use the Jews to save Christianity – while the anti-Semites portray the Jews as the fomenters of all and every plot to, er, save the Nazis.)

Breivik wrote:

“I have on some occasions had discussions with SIOE and EDL and recommended them to use certain strategies. The tactics of the EDL are now to ‘lure’ an overreaction from the Jihad Youth/Extreme-Marxists, something they have succeeded in doing several times already.”

It’s a plot to get the Muslims? Well, the Muslims have become the usual suspects. And that is in part because Muslim extremists do like to talk about loving death, killing the infidel and taking over Europe by force. Anyhow, the media played along. The New York Times wrote:

Initial reports focused on the possibility of Islamic militants, in particular Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or Helpers of the Global Jihad, cited by some analysts as claiming responsibility for the attacks. American officials said the group was previously unknown and might not even exist.

There was ample reason for concern that terrorists might be responsible.

Because only terrorists can be Islamist Muslims? The NYT also wrote:

Terrorism specialists said that even if the authorities ultimately ruled out terrorism as the cause of Friday’s assaults, other kinds of groups or individuals were mimicking al-Qaida’s signature brutality and multiple attacks.

“If it does turn out to be someone with more political motivations, it shows these groups are learning from what they see from al-Qaida,” said Brian Fishman, a counterterrorism researcher at the New America Foundation in Washington.

Because al-Qaeda is not political? It is – get this – actually a religious organisation? And even when Muslims are not involved, they are involved?

Jennifger Runbin jumped to a conclusion and then carried on jumping up and down on it:

[T]here is a specific jihadist connection here: “Just nine days ago, Norwegian authorities filed charges against Mullah Krekar, an infamous al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist who, with help from Osama bin Laden, founded Ansar al Islam – a branch of al Qaeda in northern Iraq – in late 2001.”

And on she went:

This is a sobering reminder for those who think it’s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists. I spoke to Gary Schmitt of the American Enterprise Institute, who has been critical of proposed cuts in defense and of President Obama’s Afghanistan withdrawal plan. “There has been a lot of talk over the past few months on how we’ve got al-Qaeda on the run and, compared with what it once was, it’s become a rump organization. But as the attack in Oslo reminds us, there are plenty of al-Qaeda allies still operating. No doubt cutting the head off a snake is important; the problem is, we’re dealing with global nest of snakes.”

James Fallows responded:

No, this is a sobering reminder for those who think it’s too tedious to reserve judgment about horrifying events rather than instantly turning them into talking points for pre-conceived views.

In any case, Breivik is a Muslim, isn’t he? Get this comment on Jihad Watch:

Electonic Intifada reports on how militant Muslims came to be blamed. Well a track record in blowing things up is one part of it:

The urge to speculate after grave events is understandable, but the focus of speculation, its amplification through social media, its legitimization in mainstream media, and the privilege granted to so-called experts is a common pattern…

The New York Times originally reported:

A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism…

The source is Will McCants, adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University. On his website he describes himself as formerly “Senior Adviser for Countering Violent Extremism at the U.S. Department of State, program manager of the Minerva Initiative at the Department of Defense, and fellow at West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center.” This morning, he posted “Alleged Claim for Oslo Attacks” on his blog Jihadica:

This was posted by Abu Sulayman al-Nasir to the Arabic jihadi forum, Shmukh, around 10:30am EST (thread 118187). Shmukh is the main forum for Arabic-speaking jihadis who support al-Qaeda. Since the thread is now inaccessible (either locked or taken down), I am posting it here. I don’t have time at the moment to translate the whole thing but I translated the most important bits on twitter.

McCants later reported that the claim of responsibility was retracted by the author “Abu Sulayman al-Nasir.” Furthermore, according to McCants, the moderator of this forum declared that speculation about the attack would be prohibited because the contents of the forum were appearing in mainstream media. It does seem more than a little bit odd that genuine “jihadis” would post on a closed forum that a former US official and “counterterrorism expert” openly writes about infiltrating…

Richard Bartholomew is less strident:

“Abu Sulayman al-Nasir” had made a posting of interest on a relevant forum. If McCants hadn’t noted it, someone else would have. And McCants treated the material responsibly, cautioning readers on Twitter and on his blog about the provenance of the posting (“Could just be forum user blowing hot air. forum members also confused abt who this guy is”).

I’ve written a lot about bogus terror experts on this blog (as a result I’ve been accused of being financed by George Soros or Islamic extremists). However, McCants isn’t someone who should be categorised in with the charlatans. His blog is scholarly and measured, and he first came to my attention on Twitter in June when he wrote of the need to improve counter-terrorism training (including drawing attention to the Lieberman-Collins letter).

Insofar as there has been inaccurate speculation of Islamic involvement in Oslo/Utoya, we can be rightfully scathing of those who would use the bombing and shooting to whip up anti-Muslim feeling, or who have jumped the gun irresponsibly – but it was manifestly reasonable to suspect that this was Jihadi operation. McCants was doing his job by flagging up the kind of material he regularly monitors.

As for the EDL, Reuters reports:

Anders Gravers, founder of Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE), said Anders Behring Breivik had made the application around 18 months ago.

Breivik said in an Internet posting in December 2009 (here) he had had discussions with SIOE, but Gravers said his organisation had no record of this.

“He has never been in contact with us and he has never given us any advice,” Gravers told Reuters.

But he said it was possible Breivik had attended one of its demonstrations.

He said an SIOE member in the Faroe Islands had checked Breivik’s Facebook “friends” on the social media site when he tried to join and discovered one who used a picture of Danish neo-Nazi leader Jonni Hansen as his profile picture.

“He advised us not to allow this guy to join or be able to post on the Facebook wall (message page),” said SIOE co-founder Stephen Gash.

On Pamela Geller’s Atlas Shrugs, a message appears:

SIOA and SIOE declare our sympathy for the victims and relatives of the victims of the heinous mass murders in Norway. We denounce the attacker and reiterate our dedication to the defense of free societies and opposition to all vigilantism and violence. Attempts to link us to these murders on the basis of alleged postings by the murderer mentioning us are absurd and offensive. Our work is and always has been wholly focused upon defending humane values and freedoms. There is no way that any sane person could possibly conclude that committing mass murder of children would advance the principles for which we stand. And if he was not sane, then any imputation of responsibility to us falters on that basis. Islamic jihadists and supremacists routinely invoke Islamic texts and teachings to justify violence, and thus those teachings are and should be rightly held up to scrutiny; by contrast, our record of support for human rights and the dignity of all human beings is consistent and unbroken. This murderer should be punished to the full extent of the law; any attempts to tar freedom fighters with his actions is deplorable.

Of course for the left and their rabid trolls, facts are irrelevant.

Suggestions are that Breivik blogged as Fjordman. The last post was in 2005. It reads:

Reuters reports:

A video on the YouTube website promoting a fight against Islam apparently shows pictures of the man suspected of a gun and bomb attack in Norway, wearing a wetsuit and pointing an automatic weapon.

The pictures appear at the end of an approximately 12-minute video called “Knights Templar 2083.” The video was posted here

The pictures in the video also appeared on the now closed Facebook page of Anders Behring Breivik, detained after 85 people were gunned down at a youth camp and another 7 killed in a bomb attack on Friday.

A Norwegian discussion website, www.freak.no, also had a link to a 1,500-page book called “2083 – A European Declaration of Independence.”

It was not possible to verify who uploaded the video, which was posted on July 22 by an Andrew Berwick.

The 2083 book is also signed by an Andrew Berwick. The author says within the document that Andrew Berwick is an Anglicized version of Anders Breivik.

On killing girls and women:

Every female category A, B, C traitor or system protector out there is someone’s daughter, someone’s sister or mother. But then again, so are the victims of the current systems, f example the girl who committed suicide after being gang-raped by Muslims.

On being an “urban Knight”:
