Nicaragua’s Santo Domingo Festival Photos: Faces Of The Day

by | 25th, July 2011

FACE of The Day: A “promesante” or promiser, with his body coated in a mix of grease and motor oil, takes part in the pre-Santo Domingo festivities in Managua, Nicaragua. Some of the faithful coat their bodies in a black lubricant annually as a promise for a prayer or miracle they believe was performed or answered by Managua’s patron saint, Santo Domingo de Guzman.

The first 10 days of August are reserved for the carnival-like celebration of Santo Domingo with processions, bullfights, parties and church services. (Local greens can use soya bean oil.)
