Solving the Riots Without Spending Any Money

by | 10th, August 2011

HOW do we stop the riots? No, we don’t have to go an buy 50 inch plasmas and a change of running shoes for the little scrotes so that they won’t plunder them.

No, we don’t have to pay more policement either. Thankfully, given that the Met employs 32,000 of them but when they get an all staff to action stations call they can only manage to find 16,000….and many of those from other forces…..so we’re probably already paying more to pass the donut plates in the offices than we need to be already.

No, there’s actually an excellent source of exactly what we need out there, a source we can tap into for free.

You’ll have seen in the papers today that various areas had various groups of locals policing their own neighbourhoods. We have a word for that sort of behaviour: vigilantes.

We also have a phrase which describes exactly that behaviour when legalised: Special Constable.

And we’ve a supply of them: those very people currently guarding their own areas. All we need is a magistrate or two to start swearing them in (and a magistrate can swear in as many as he sees fit to) and we have a near unlimited supply of people with the same powers of arrest as a regular police officer. With the extra added bonus that they know their areas and are actually interested in protecting said areas.

We could call it the Big Society in action.
