by | 19th, September 2011

VINCENT Cooke, 39, was at home in Midland Road, Bramhall, Stockport when, reportedly, two men broke just before 8pm last Saturday night. During the event, Mr Cooke’s wife his wife Karen, 34, and their 12-year-old son arrived at the scene. One of the intruders, a Raymond Jacob, 37, was stabbed to death. Cooke, a married father of one was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Another man escaped in a white Citroen van. He has now been arrested. He’s 33.

Was it murder? Or was Mr Cooke acting in self defence. How did Jacob, of Wythenshawe, south Manchester, die?

Chief Superintendent Rebekah Sutcliffe of Greater Manchester Police tells media:

“It is vital we establish the exact circumstances in which Raymond died and determine whether or not it was a criminal act or of self-defence. This process will clearly take time because it is important we do not make snap decisions but investigate fully and without prejudice.

“This is clearly a distressing incident for all concerned – Raymond’s family, the occupants of the house and the wider community in Bramhall. Due to the nature of the incident, we understand that people will have strong opinions on this subject and this remains a matter of national debate.

“However, I want to stress that my officers have to operate within the law and our primary aim is to establish exactly what happened that night. Greater Manchester Police also has a duty to the family of the deceased, the occupants of the house and the coroner to fully investigate what happened to Raymond Jacob.”

The Sun says:

Burglar Raymond Jacob, 37, is believed to have been stabbed with his own knife…

Mr Cooke runs courier firm Transco Express Logistics…

Mr Cooke was initially arrested on suspicion of murder. Police said that he has now been bailed until October 17, pending further inquiries…

Detectives are trying to determine whether the raiders knew Mr Cooke. Another theory is that they targeted the house because the family have a Range Rover and a gold Maserati sports car.

The Daily Mail has other details:

Businessman Vincent Cooke, 39, was relaxing when he heard a knock at the front door of his detached home. When he answered he was confronted by two men, at least one armed with a knife, who allegedly threatened him and tried to force their way into the £350,000 house in the Cheshire stockbroker belt.

With his wife and young son due home any minute, Mr Cooke fought desperately to keep the men out. In the struggle burglar Raymond Jacob, 37, was stabbed with his own knife and fell to the ground fatally injured. The second intruder fled.

The case is being opened up to armchair detectives…
