New York Times, Kanye West And Chattering Fasionistas Turn Occupy Wall Street Into A Huge Joke

by | 11th, October 2011

CAN Kanye West and the New York Times join forces with bearded man with loud hailer to turn the Occupy Wall Street protest into an international laughing stock? Well, they are tying.

West swapped his diamond teeth for gold ones to better mingle and blend in with the working stiffs in New York.

This is blue collar West who celebrates his wealth and tweets observations such as:

Man I’m heading to Abu Dhabi finna go to Ferrari Land YESSSS!!! ..

Maybe West and Occupy Wall Street deserve one another? The campaigns aim might be to give a voice to the masses who can’t afford Washington lobby groups, private health care and trips to Ferrari Land, but the speakers are beyond parody.

The New York Times highlights one protestor, who tells us:

“I like the use of public space as a performative realm and I like the combination of bodies in space”

As if to put the tin lid on the trendy rebellion, the NYT creates a feature called What To Wear To A Protest, highlights of which are:

Brian Allen, 19
Why are you protesting? “I’m here just to see what everybody else is doing….

Dan DiMaggio, 29
What are you wearing? “My shoes are Adidas. I got them for $20.”
Why are you protesting? “It’s great that there is a visible demonstration of opposition to the entrenched corporate power in this country which has control over the political system and control over the economy.

Liza Tichenor, 30
What are you wearing? “The pencil skirt is vintage I got at a thrift store. My gauzy shirt I just got the other day and I’ve worn it maybe four times already. The sunglasses are Michael Kors.”

Marissa Mickelberg, 30
What are you wearing? “I’ve got Aldo boots on and these are jeans my mom gave me for Christmas. My top is American Apparel. The vest is Forever 21. My glasses are from the street. My hammer earrings I got online at Etsy.”
Why are you protesting? “I like the use of public space as a performative realm and I like the combination of bodies in space. I think it makes a statement.”

Nicole Thomas, 22
What are you wearing? “I’m wearing Doc Martens. I got these tights in London. This is a shirt from Victoria’s Secret.”

Judith Carluccio, 68
What are you wearing? “My black velvet jacket is from J. Jill.”

Timothy Matthew Collins, 30
What are you wearing? “I am wearing what I wore to teach class. I am wearing pens because I use them to actually draw. The green polo is Stone Island. The pants are from Club Monaco and the blazer is from Seoul, Korea.”

Nathan Torrence, 23
What are you wearing? “We’re a band called Environmental Encroachment. The leggings, I like to provide some hallucinogenic visual stimulation for people. Pretty much everything I’m wearing is supposed to be awe-inspiring and hallucinogenic. And it also feels really good to wear tights. ”
Why are you protesting? “I don’t really know how to explain it. I think some things should be different than how they are”

The New York Times‘ parody of the protest also features an editorial that begins:

“As the Occupy Wall Street protests spread from Lower Manhattan to Washington and other cities, the chattering classes keep complaining that the marchers lack a clear message and specific policy prescriptions.”

Any idea who those chattering classes are, New York Times editorial writer and your vain, fashionable friends..?

Still, the signs are great:
