Regan Smith’s Mohican Gets Him Out School And In The Papers

by | 22nd, October 2011

THE Warrington Guardian reports on the 11-year-old boy with a mohican haircut. But the story seems to be less about Regan Smith and his quest for individuality and identity than his mum.

The story begins:

Kirsty Smith is currently keeping son Regan away from Penketh High School because staff have told him to change his hairstyle or he will be put into isolation until it grows back.

Regan has a mohican.

But Kirsty, of Cronulla Drive, Great Sankey, is refusing to back down and remove the mohican.

Kirsty is 36. She says:

“I find it ridiculous that they think I should change his haircut. He only wears it down for school – I wouldn’t let him wear it up. It’s part of his individuality and I’m not prepared to change it and he doesn’t want me to either.”

The paper adds:

Regan has sported the mohican, designed by Kirsty, for six years.

When we do hear from Regan, he offers:

“I would feel ridiculous without it, it makes me an individual. All my mates like it and some want it too.”

Yeah, they want it – but they don’t have it, Regan. And that means they can go to school.

Says Kirsty:

“We are a different family and this is our lifestyle. He is being punished for his individuality.”

No. He’s being punished for his haircut.

Regan plays rugby, trains at judo and wants to be a cage fighter. He is also training to do tattoos like dad and tattoo artist Andy.

It just keeps getting better.

Adds mum:

I like people to walk into a room and see him. This doesn’t affect his lifestyle – his grades, attitude and behaviour are good. My concern is getting him back into school.”

Says head teacher Mr Jeff Hughes:

“At our school we have a clear policy on haircuts which applies to all pupils and which all parents are aware of. We’ve been in discussions with Mr and Mrs Smith about this issue and our main priority is getting their son back into school. We want to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”

Says one commentator:

I am not surprised the school head teacher has objected to the mohican hairstyle, it’s off-centre! lol
