Julie Burchill Leaves The Independent WIth A Swipe At Jemima Khan and Johann Hari
Her final piece ends:
Give the people what they want, goes the old line, and that day is here at last for me and the vast majority of Independent readers as I write my final column. I leave you with a light heart, well aware that it’s time for me to move over. So I will now concentrate mainly on learning Hebrew and writing my memoir of philo-Semitism UNCHOSEN, with supplementary activity based around lunching, lazing and loafing. And the occasional foray into journalism, of course – I’d miss my trolls too much if I retired.
L’hitraot! as we say in Israel – be seeing you!
Only, Private Eye says it did not end there. The sub-editors cut off her last words:
I can’t say that this has been the most inspiring position of my long career, and to be fair to complaining readers, I’ve hardly given it 100%. More like 10% – which was OK when I was young and brilliant, but doesn’t really add up to much now I’m on the wane. If the pram in the hall is the enemy of promise, then domestic contentment is the enemy of bile, and my very pleasurable private life over the past decade and a half has done noting to improve my writing. Whatever, it’s a fair exchange, and so I leave you with a light heart, well aware that it’s time for me to move over and make room for hot ‘n’ happening hip young gunslingers….
As Private Eye adds:
And thus, unbeknown to Indie readers, with a final scratchy swipe at poor little rich girl Jemima Khan and Johann ‘Steel-True and Blade Straight’ Hari, she was off…
You can buy the Private Eye annual here. We get a mention on page 110. And we are pathetically pleased about it.
