Greeks Sue Germany’s Focus Magazine For Defamation: The Venus De Milo Finger

by | 5th, December 2011

DEUTSCHLAND Uber Hellas! But the Greek are fighting back. Greeks are upset at the February 2010 cover of Germany’s Focus magazine featuring the goddess Aphrodite (aka the usually fingerless Venus de Milo (it will be lovely when it’s finished) giving a finger to the rest of Europe.

The story was entitled “Swindlers in the Euro Family”.

(Yep, family. Ancient Britons not keen on being related to Germans, Greek’s or Spaniards might also sue.)

Six Greeks are suing ten Focus employees involved in the story, including Helmut Markwort, the magazine’s founder. Greece’s public prosecutor Ourania Stathea is exploring the case for sings of defamation, libel and the “denigration of Greek national symbols“. The matter will come before an Athens court on June 29,

Markwort says he has a “clean conscience” and was just carrying out his “journalistic duty.”

The rest of the staff were, lest it go unsaid, working under their own volition…

And if you really want to insult a foreigner, here’s how:

CONCHA
A - bad idea in: Chile

Another delight from the Southern Hemisphere. Hold up a palm towards you and slightly curl the fingers to form the shape of a shell. Then say, "Concha de tu madre," which literally means, "Your mother's shell," but figuratively means, "Your mama's dried up, nasty cooch." Try it at a soccer game or protest rally, and let us know what happens.
