Edinburgh Zoo’s Tian Tian and Yang Guang Kickstart 10 Years Of Waiting For Pandas To Have Sex (Photos)

by | 6th, December 2011

TIAN Tian and Yang Guang have landed at Edinburgh Airport. They arrived on a specially-chartered non-stop flight from China. The eight-year-old breeding pair are now at Edinburgh Zoo, which will be their new home for the next 10 years. These are Britain’s first resident pandas in 17 years. And everyone want to know one thing: will they – you know – do it?

Well, both have already produced offspring, although not with each other. So when Tian Tian is up for it – during a “window” lasting for about 24-48 hour – Yang will be primed.

And the price for waiting for pandas to have sex is pretty high: the zoo has hired the pandas from China for around £650,000 a year, and will spend £70,000 on bamboo grown on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

But if the pandas make a baby, the zoo will be quids in. Says Hugh Roberts, chief executive of the Scottish zoological society:

“They both know what to do and that’s a start. I don’t think Yang Guang’s sexual prowess is in doubt.”

And with thousands of people watching their every move in captivity, and millions more tuning in via webcam, how can the pair fail to get in the mood for loving? How…?
