Sahar Gul shows us how Afghanistan has changed
SAHAR Gul is the 15-year-old Afghan wife tortured by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law in their effort to make her a prostitute. Sahar Gul was assaulted for six months, held in basement while her fingernails were ripped off and her skin damaged with hot irons.
Sahar Gul has been shown to media at a hospital in Baghlan, north of Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghan President Hamid Karzai said police will arrest members of a family accused of torturing and illegally detaining their son’s teenage wife Gul for the past six months.
Why are we being shown this now? Why when the US military is being withdrawn and aid money is puring into Post-Taliban Afghanistan are we being shown this now? The Afghans want us in the West to know that things are bad – but the Government has Western values and wants thing to improve for women.
Interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi says:
“It is a violent act that is unacceptable in the 21st century. We are thankful [to] Sahar Gul’s uncle [he told the police].”
He adds that “if the police had not arrived in time she may have died“.
You see, the Afghan police are not useless. They are not mugs waiting to be slaughtered to the Taliban. They are not the Taliban, who thanks to the West, have been defeated…
