by | 8th, January 2012

CHERLY Carter has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Cheryl Carter was a former executive assistant to ex-News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks, ex-NoW managing editor Stuart Kuttner, and former NoW deputy editor Neil Wallis. Cheryl Carter worked for Rebekah Brooks for 19 years. She was also – get this – the Sun’s Beauty Editor. All three of Cheryl Carter’s old bosses have been arrested as as part of Operation Weeting, the Met’s inquiry into phone hacking.

Operation Weeting is running alongside Operation Elveden, the investigation into alleged police corruption. Operation Weeting has seen 17 arrests. Operation Elveden has secured 8 arrests. How many serving officer have been arrested on Operation Elveden? One.

Met Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson and Assistant Commissioner John Yates resigned.

The New York Times reports that Carter’s arrest “appears to reflect the investigators’ intensifying focus on the possibility of a cover-up by executives, editors and others of the extent of illegal phone hacking and other criminal wrongdoing at the The News of the World“.

Cheryl Carter has been released on police bail pending further questioning.

Ms. Carter, who was described by those who worked with her as Ms. Brooks’s “gatekeeper,” with close knowledge of Ms. Brooks’s schedule, e-mails and meetings…

According to two former staff members who did not want to be named because they were discussing a topic that was the subject of an active police investigation, Ms. Carter was fiercely loyal to Ms. Brooks. A person who claimed to have been present on the day that Ms. Brooks cleared out her office at News International’s headquarters, and who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the two women were seen carrying items to a parked car.

On this beauty site, we learn that Cheryl Carter:

The Sun’s former Beauty Editor and co-founder of Famous Cosmetics, my good friend Cheryl Carter mingles with the stars and knows all their secrets…

Oh aye?

…of looking fabulous.

In her most recent piece for the News International back October 2011, Cheryl Carter gave tips on skin care. The headline of the piece:

“Ways to get even with the sun”

Well, it might depend on what kind of deal they offer. Rebekah Brooks scored a £1.7m pay off from News International…
