Holocaust Remembrance Day 2012 – in photos

by | 27th, January 2012

HOLOCAUST Remembrance Day 2012 – in photos. The remembrance day marks the day of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps 67 years ago. Outside the death camps – beyond those gates with their demonic German joke – survivors gathered. They came to remember. They came to remind us not to forget.

The portraits of Soviet soldiers at a remembrance site at the Sachsenhausen Nazi death are eerie. They stand on a stone field marking a barrack that hosted a so-called “neck-shot facility”. More than 10,000 Soviet prisoners of war were killed in one barrack in 1941. The numbers are too big to comprehend. You can only take in one face at a time…and that can be too much to stand…

In this Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012 photo, an Ultra Orthodox Jewish holocaust survivor attends a weekly meeting at the Misgav Lakashish seniors' club in the orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem. It's a huge question for observant Jews: How can one still believe in a merciful God after suffering through the worst genocide in history? Members of Israel's most devout group are unbowed in their faith. This week, as the world marks Holocaust Remembrance Day, they'll remember the victims as they always do - with prayer, study of scripture and a burning conviction in a grand plan that is beyond their earthly comprehension.
