A RIOT at a football match in Egypt between Masry and al-Ahly has left many dead. Early reports put the number at 73. The BBC says 25. Right now, it;s guesswork.

Port Said side Masry won 3-1. And then violence came. Fans streamed on to the pitch, attacking secutoty , players and other fans.

The BBC’s Jon Leyne in Cairo says it fans had taken knives into the stadium.

The mayhem also focused renewed attention on the potential savagery of organized groups of die-hard fans, known here as ultras, who have emerged as a volatile component of Egyptian politics in the year of turmoil since Mr. Mubarak left power.

In all, 74 people have died and 248 more are injured.
