Times journalist sparks newspaper cycling safety campaign in time for Boris Johnson’s re-election

by | 2nd, February 2012

MARY Bowers is the Times lead story.  The paper is heralding its ‘Cities fit for cycling‘ campaign. Mary Bowers is the Times news reporter badly injured in a bike accident. Her bike collided with a lorry in Wapping last November. She is in hospital. She is still unconscious.

Mary’s Times colleague Kaya Burgess writes on the Times front page:

The reality with any major issue is that it only truly touches you when it comes close to home. However regularly you may cycle on Britain’s city streets and however aware you are of the risks of doing so, it is not until you have seen one of your closest friends and colleagues stretchered off the tarmac from beneath the wheels of a lorry only yards from the office that the vulnerability of cyclists hits home.

More here. And, yes, it  is outside the paper’s paywall.

Note: London Mayor Boris Johnson is a keen cyclist. The 2012 London mayoral election will be held on Thursday 3 May 2012. Boris needs support and a legacy.  The Boris Bikes – the rentals that pepper the London streets –  should number 8,000 by the time the London Olympics kicks off. Are they any use if the roads of London remain dangerous to cyclists? Boris..?
