LIVERPOOL’S Luis Suarez has refused to shake the hand of Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. Suarez the racial abuser or Evra the grass? Whose side are you on? The pundits will say this is not a good advert for football. But it is. It’s exposes the bite, bile and nastiness than lies beneath the shiny, SKY TV, corporate veneer of all big matches.

One question: is there a football fan who does not look at Suarez shunning Evra and think they quite like him for it? He’s served his punishment – an eight match ban for racially abusing the hard-to-like Evra – but Suraez does not have to be re-educated. His punishment did not include therapy sessions to get him on track with the anti-racist agenda that seeks out racism in dust. Did Suarez shun Evra because Evra is black? No. French? No. A United player? No. He just doesn’t like him. In the cauldron of professional sprot, rivalries based on dislike are the stuff of glory and greatness.

It’s thrilling stuff. The fans love it. Game on…
