“Bündchen-bashing”: America’s newest sport

by | 11th, February 2012

GISELE  BÜNDCHEN, international supermodel and wife of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, went from asking for prayers to spouting profanities in a week. Now, the most famous of Victoria’s Secret Angels is facing a media offense and it seems “Bündchen-bashing” has become America’s newest sport.

Before Sunday’s Super Bowl final between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants, the Brazilian blonde sent an email to family and friends asking them to pray for her quarterback hubbie. The New York Post got hold of the note, in which she asked for “positive energy” so that Brady and his team could “fulfil their dream of winning”. It was all very New Age.

The positive prayers fell on deaf ears.

The Giants crushed the Patriots’ dream. According to Bündchen’s game analysis there was nothing wrong with her husband’s performance, though. Just after the game, she was caught on camera while on her way out of the stadium. The video, which has been making the rounds online in the past week, shows fans heckling her. One man shouts, off-camera: “Eli owns your husband!” That’s Eli Manning, the Giants quarterback. Bündchen is then heard saying: “My husband cannot f***ing throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.”

It’s not clear whether she wanted the hecklers to hear her or if the angry comment was just meant for her friends. Regardless, it got caught on camera and is officially a gaffe. As it happens, many sports commentators seem to agree with Bündchen, but still think she should know her place and “zip it”.

Sure, it was tactless and it is unlikely that the comment will help Patriots players and fans warm to Bündchen. After all, she is already knows as a wicked wife among the other Patriot spouses who, according to one team staffer, thinks she has an “arrogant attitude”.

But some Bündchen-bashers have certainly outdone the model in bitchiness. Giants running back, Brandon Jacobs, for instance, weighed in on Tuesday. He told reporters that “She just needs to continue to stay cute and shut up”. Jacobs later said he was sorry for saying Bündchen should keep schtum, but he refused to retract his comment about her appearance. That, he said, was a compliment. Actually, Jacobs didn’t apologise for being disrespectful to Bündchen at all. He apologised for being disrespectful to a fellow football player’s wife. In other words, his apology was a man-to-man one. A double insult.

Well, regardless, Jacobs should be able to speak his mind without having to bow to the easily offended – and so should Bündchen. There may not be a whole lot of “positive energy” around her these days, but her feisty, post-game balls talk was a lot more sensible than all that f***ing New Age babble she spouted before the Super Bowl final.
