Australian advertises jobs for ‘No Irish’ – video

by | 14th, March 2012

THE advert on Gumtree states that no Irish need apply for the job:

“Bricklayer needed ASAP. $250 a day, no part-time workers and NO IRISH”

Hats off to the employer, we thought, for doing his bit to change stereotypes. Other ads might go on to call for only Jewish tarmac engineers, Polish bankers, Native American action heroes, Buddhist riot police and German clowns. But , sadly, the ad was just steeped in alleged prejudice.

Simon, the man who placed the ad, said:

“I have no trouble with Irish people. But I’ve had to fire a number of people. I’ve had lots of Irish people say they have experience bricklaying but come over and have no clue how to lay bricks. I’m very busy and don’t have time to be watching over them.”

A spokesman for the Australian Embassy in Dublin sees a chance to show off his side’s anti-racist credentials:

“The Australian Government has no tolerance for racism and discrimination and this is reflected in a broad range of anti-discrimination legislation in Australia. The Government has an unwavering commitment to a multicultural Australia and greatly welcomes the contribution made by people of all backgrounds , regardless of origin, gender, or colour, to Australia’s culture, society, and prosperity.”

Or as The Age reported in 2011:

The United Nations’s top human rights watchdog has attacked Australia’s tough refugee policies and the treatment of outback Aborigines, saying there was a strong undercurrent of racism in the country. Long-standing policies of locking up asylum seekers had “cast a shadow over Australia’s human rights record”, and appeared to be completely arbitrary, UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay said.

Black Irish apply within…
