Jewish children murdered in Toulouse school shooting – round up the usual suspects

by | 19th, March 2012

IS everyone anti-semitic – even the Jews? In Toulouse, France, a gunman has fired on the Ozar Hatorah Jewish secondary school.

Teacher Jonathan Sandler, 30, his sons Aryeh, three, and Gavriel Yissacher, six, and Miriam Montenago, the eight-year-old daughter of the school’s headteacher, have been shot dead. A 17-year-old has been seriously injured. (Update: he died.)

Why? Was it drugs? Honour killing? Mistaken identity? Is that why they died? Or do you look at the names and the school and the race of the victims and think they were the victims of anti-semitism?

Witness Franck Califa tells media:

“For now, I have only tears. I’m in shock. I do not think things like that can happen. I held one of the victims in my arms.”

On Thursday last, a man on a motorbike shot three French paratroopers 29 north of Toulouse. Just over one week ago, a French soldier was murderd by a man on a motorbike.

Chief Sergeant Imad Ibn Ziahen, 30, of the 1st Parachute Regiment, was shot and killed in a residential district in Toulouse on March 11. Four days later Corporal Abel Chenoulf, 24, and Corporal Loic Lieber, 28, of the 17th Parachute Regiment, were shot and killed as they withdraw money from a cash dispenser opposite their barracks in nearby Montauban. Private Mohamed Legouad, 26, was seriously injured in the shooting.

Sergeant Ibn Ziahen and Corporal Chenoulf were of North African origin, as is Private Legouad. Corporal Lieber was black.

In all the murders, a 11.43mm calibre automatic firearm was deployed.

So. French Jews are the victims. Which means that the Sun must quote the views of Israel before any word from a French official. Why? Were the murdered children Israeli? Early reports say they were not.

Israel said today it was “horrified” by the shooting. Foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said: “We are horrified by this attack and we trust the French authorities to shed full light on this tragedy and bring the perpetrators of these murders to justice.”

This is how it is to be a Jew in Europe. Schools and synagogues are patrolled by security. There are strips of barbed wire and alarms. It;s all about Israel, they say. But it isn’t. It’s about Jews.

The Times says:

Three children and teacher killed in school shooting

Children before Jews.

The BBC goes with:

France shooting: Toulouse Jewish school attack kills four

The Washington Post says:

French prime minister ordersd all schools and religious buildings secured after shootings

Synagogues. Temples. Mosques…

Tom Chivers writes:

It’s the Jewish aspect that is particularly distressing. In Britain, and perhaps especially on the Left, we like to imagine that anti-Semitic attacks are a thing of a sordid past, expunged with Nazism in the fires of the Second World War. But they’re not; there were 270 recorded anti-Semitic incidents in this country in 2009 alone. In other European countries, it’s even more common.

Nazis? Anti-Semitism is back, for sure. But it’s the fear of it that also hurts the Jews. Can they create a No Holocaust Day? Can they ever move on? And is it harder to if you study in a religious school? Should they be outlawed?
