IN Photos – Pope Shenouda III (born: Nazeer Gayedhas) been laid to rest at the Saint Bishoy monastery in Wadi Natroun, northwest of Cairo, Egypt. President Sadat exiled Shenouda to the Monastery of St Bishoy in the 1970s as tensions between Muslism ad Coptic rose. The leader of Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church sought to protect his flock from Muslim extremists, who have in recent years renews attacks the Christian Coptic community. He was 88. His funeral was spectacular:

Note: Three mourners suffocated inside Cairo’s main Abbasiya cathedral as tens of thousands of mourners gathered yesterday to catch a glimpse of Pope Shenouda III’s embalmed corpse. Pope Shenuda’s body had been placed upright on display on a wooden throne in a Cairo cathedral. Pictures of that are here.

Mourners touch and kiss the tomb of Pope Shenouda III after his interment at the Saint Bishoy monastery in Wadi Natroun, northwest of Cairo, Egypt, Tuesday, March 20, 2012. Pope Shenouda III, an iconic figure for 40 years at the helm of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church, was laid to rest Tuesday in a desert monastery after a moving funeral Mass at a Cairo cathedral attended by tens of thousands. Shenouda's death brought an outpouring of expressions of Muslim-Christian unity, but it has done little to hide the alarm of Egypt's 10 million Christians and liberal Muslims over the political ascent of Islamists.
