The Federation of Student Islamic Societies in Dublin, George Galloway and sectarianism for Syria

by | 31st, March 2012

DAYS after the ‘true Muslim‘ George Galloway became an MP, members of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies in Dublin staged a flash mob on O’Connell Street to highlight human rights abuses by the Assad regime in Syria. Why pick on Galloway? Well, it was he who said that President Bashar al-Assad of Syria was a “breath of fresh air”.

What does this matter? Well, why do Islamic students stage the protest? Is Ireland, like the UK, one big community or many small communities each with vested interests that need to be addressed? Galloway understood his audience. He seems to have gotten the vote more on foreign policy than on his love of Bradford West. His victory chants to “Allah”, tweets that “by the Grace of God” he had won and “Long live Iraq. Long live Palestine, free, Arab, dignified”, and the Muslim Public Affairs Committee’s assertion that the Labour candidate, one Imran Hussein” was “thirsty” and “likes his refreshment” unlike a ‘true Muslims’ hit their mark.

This was sectarian politics. It’s about us and them.
