Which celebrity and cause will help George Zimmerman fight a murder charge?

GEORGE Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin’s supporters will get their day in court. Zimmerman, the armed “white Hispanic” Florida Neighbourhood Watch activist who pursued “suspicious” 17-year-old black teenager Trayvon Martin in the city of Sanford and shot him dead has been charged with second degree murder.

Zimmerman says he is innocent. So do the local police, who did not investigate the killing, saying the death was in accordance with Florida’s Stand Your Ground rule. Zimmerman said Martin had attacked him first The police agreed. The police did not even test Zimmerman for drugs or drink.

Many of those protesting Trayvon Martin’s death say Zimmerman is guilty. Barack Obama said “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon” – an opinion based not on Martin’s school grades but on the teen’s skin colour.

Many more protestors say Zimmerman is guilty. Many more just want justice to be done and to be seen to be done.

Angela Corey is the special prosecutor appointed to investigate the killing. Says she:

“We did not come to this decision lightly. We have numerous homicides where immediate arrests are not made…To us it did not seem that unusual.”

Sure. Says it enough times and see if anyone believes you. A local death has become a national symbol of racial divisions and of the black lot.

Sybrina Fulton, Mr Martin’s mother, tells The Associated Press:

“I just want to speak from my heart to your heart. Because a heart has no color. It’s not black. It’s not white. It’s red. And I want to say thank you from my heart to your heart. Thank you. We simply wanted an arrest. We wanted no more, no less, and we got it.”

Zimmerman faces a life sentence without parole. He’s launched the websiteTheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com.about that “life altering” event. He is appealing for money to help his legal fight.

Says Zimmerman:

I am attempting to respond to each and everyone of my supporters personally. The support has been overwhelming in volume and strength. I thank you all and ask that you permit me the time to respond to each one of you personally.

Will anyone with a high-profile donate to George Zimmerman’s fighting fund and feed the story of a young man’s death? Will Geraldo Rivera grandstand some more? The prosecution has Obama on its side – and Zimmerman is mixed-race registered Democrat, like Obama. Will Republicans wade into the issue – after all, it was President Dubya’s brother Jeb Bush who introduced the Stand Your Ground law?

Watch this space..
