Kim Jong Un talks for 20 minutes ordering his lunch

by | 15th, April 2012

TO North Korea, where Kim Jong Un is talking to the massed ranks of uniformed subjects in Pyongyang. It’s the occasion of the 100th birthday of Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Un’s grandfather and North Korea’s founding President, now deceased.

The crowd hope Mr Kim Jong Un manages to be there for his centennial, chanting:

“May he live 10,000 years.”

Says Kim Jong Un, 27 years young:

“I express my greetings to our compatriots in South Korea and across the world who dedicate themselves to reunification and the prosperity of the nations … Let’s move on towards our final victory.”

Is that a threat? Last Friday, the country’s satellite-bearing rocket exploded soon after take-off. It was reported thus:

The earth observation satellite failed to enter its preset orbit.

Mr Kim is undaunted. He is the new chairman of the National Defence Commission. He is also First Secretary of the Party, chairman of the Central Military Commission, member of the Politburo and its Presidium and all round Good Egg with Jimmy Carr’s hair. If Mr Kim did daunted he would be its President.

And he’s not just about the letters. Kim Jong Un can talk. His speech lasted  for 20 minutes. The only words spoken in public by his father were in 1992, when he said: “Let there be glory for the heroic soldiers of Korea.”

How bonkers is that? Kim Jong il proved his menace and lunacy by saying very little.  Kim Jong Un will need to be his own man. He’ll  prove he’s up to the job of being an unhinged despot by talking a lot, upping his 20 minutes a day until he can speak non-stop – including in his sleep – without hesitation, deviation or repetition. As one fan tells media: “We will follow him wherever his friendly voice is heard.” Although if Mr King sings it means he’s in the shower and you need to wait outside…
