The British Council archive – 120 films of life in the 1940s

THE British Council is the “UK’s international cultural relations body”, delivering cultual propaganda to make Britain great in the eyes of the world since its creation in 1934. Now you can see what the BC showed and told the savages in its online archive of 120 short films on life in Great Britain, all created in the 1940s. They are all wonderful, snapshots of a world GB wanted to present to the foreigners. Only a few are in full colour, the rest are merely rose-tinted. We’ve picked out a few choice cuts:

Football – a gift to the world:

Cricket – a game for gentlemen

The Rabbit – inside and out

Gardens – A green and pleasant land

And The Life History of The Onion
