Hull man built bomb workshop at home – you might laugh

by | 5th, September 2012

PAUL Smith built a “bomb workshop” at his Hull home. At Hull Crown Court, Mr Smith was sentenced to a 10-year anti-social behaviour order banning him from owning fireworks and flares not “commercially available“, and handed a 12-month community order for the crime of owning explosive substances.

Smith said it was his “hobby“. We might note that all bomb making stuff is commercially available so long as you head to the right arms fair.
Det Ch Insp Steve Hibbit, from Humberside Police, said Mr SMith had no plans to hurt anyone:

“What is extraordinary is the fact that he was living at home [with his parents] and he was even given a birthday cake in the shape of a bomb. If it wasn’t so dangerous it could be comical. He was clearly self-taught using recipes that are readily available to anybody, but it’s not a joke. It is a very serious matter.”
Mr Smith never hurt anyone. The police, however, always shoot to kill. And when the police get it wrong (see Marc Duggan), none of them end up in the dock. Funny how justice works. You might laugh…
