Tommy Mattinson wins World Gurning crown for 14th year

by | 18th, September 2012

AND the World Gurning Championship is… Tommy Mattinson. That’s 14 wins in a row now for Mattinson, at Cumbria’s Egremont Crab Fair.

How does it feel, Tommy Mattinson?

“I’m pleased to have won again. My neck’s sore, but other than that I’m OK.”

The women’s contest was won by Newcastle’s Helen Irving from Newcastle.

Sadly, gurning is not yet a televised sport, but if it was can we nominate Bruce Forsythe for the presenter’s role..?

Reigning World Gurning Champion Peter Jackman gets in some last minute practice ahead of the defence of his title at the Egremont Crab Fair, near Whitehaven in Cumbria. * During the championships, which is thought to date back to the days when the village idiot was invited to pull funny faces in exchange for a few pints of beer, contestants put on a horse collar and compete to pull the most grotesque face.
