Shannon Matthews wants to be left alone

SHANNON Matthews’ name is bouncing off the walls at the High Court.

In February 2008, Shannon, 9, vanished. The media descended on working class Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire. After 24 days, Shannon was found. She’d been abducted by her mother as part of a scam to win reward money. Her mother Karen and uncle Michael Donovan were each jailed for eight years.

Shannon’s father, Leon Rose, is now appealing against an official report by Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board being made public.

His lawyer says the report – a redacted one – would cause Shannon “upheaval“.

Anthony Hayden QC told the court:

“While it is possible, at least theoretically, to revise the report in a way that makes it perfectly plain that the father is a positive and important influence in Shannon’s life, nothing can prevent the upheaval to her life that will be caused by the publication of this document. That is primarily why we are seeking to resist publication.”

The appeal says the report could “seriously compromise the delicate progression of Shannon’s therapeutic work”.

Why do we need to know anything about Shannon’s private life?

Note: Michael Donovan, 44, was arrested in September for, reportedly, breaching the terms of his parole. A fews days earlier there were reports that he’d been recognised by locals who shouted and spat on him.
