THE Black Christ of Panama (Nazareno of Portobelo) resides at Portobelo’s Iglesia de San Felipe church. The believers come to worship:

A man drips candle wax on a devotee as part of his penance, as pilgrims make their way, some crawling, on the road that leads to the San Felipe Catholic church, to mark the three century old celebration, the Black Christ Festival, in Portobelo, on Panama’s Caribbean Coast, Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012. Thousands of faithful join in the procession of the life-size statue of the Black Christ as it is taken from its place at the church altar, and paraded through the town in a carnival like celebration before returning the statue to the church at midnight.
