REFEREES are people too. Mark Clattenburg claims that after Manchester United had defeated Chelsea in controversial circumstances (is it ever not so?), a few Chelsea staff came into his room and he was abused. Clattenburg has filed an “extraordinary incident report” with the FA. The story goes that after sending off  two Chelsea players and allowing an offside goal by which United won the match 2-3 – a moment that triggered some Chelsea fans to toss as much as £20 in coins onto the pitch – Ron Gourlay, manager Roberto Di Matteo,  Eddie Newton and Obi Mikel went to see the ref.

The Daily Mirror explains:

Banging and shouting could be heard coming from the referee’s dressing room. Seconds later, tunnel security staff rushed into the room to come between the two parties. They were followed into what is an enclosed area by Chelsea captain John Terry, who watch the game from the stand while continuing his FA suspension for racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand.

To put the tin lid on this, Clattenburg is accused of having racially abused Jon Obi Mikel and Juan Mata, allegedly calling the latter a “Spanish twat”.

The matter is huge. On BBC Radio Five Live former Premier League referee and Glasgow Rangers fan Jeff Winter says:

“If a match official has used racial insults or language to a player then he’s for the high jump. He won’t be getting a four-match or an eight-match ban, it’ll probably be the end of his career, but that is if indeed he did say anything.”

What a great choice of guest. In September 2012, officers from Strathclyde Police searched his home in Middlesbrough. Police said:

This is part of an ongoing inquiry in connection with alleged offensive comments posted on a website. A further operation on Tuesday resulted in a man being detained and subsequently released in London in connection with the incident. Enquiries are continuing.”

A post dated December 30, 2011 had appeared on Winters’ blog:

“Star man is once again the bearer of bad tidings. Celtic are top of the league!! Now the football implications are obvious, but what does it mean for the altar boys? Do they get abused in celebration? Would it gave [sic] been worse in the anger of defeat? Or would they just get abused anyway? What’s this got to do with football, nothing, but anyone who backs the Catholic Church that is fronted by a dress wearing, Nazi, kiddy fiddling protector deserves all the vitriol it gets. FTP!!”

Winter says it wasn’t him.
