Daily Mail spots black Superstorm Sandy looters for Oscar Grant
TO many the story of Superstorm Sandy is one that brought out the best of humanity. People helped one another. But not everyone behaved well. A few people looted. Of the millions of people hit by the destruction, a few opportunists went on the rob.
The paper yells:
“Even momma got outta house to loot new shirt': Looters brag on Twitter”
The Mail says the Looter are organising themsevls on twitter with the #SANDYLOOTCREW hashtag.
But – get this – the bragging might be nonsense. A tweet is not proof of a crime.
Adam Shergold and the prolific Daily Mail Reporter write:
Looting for clothes: Tevon D’sean Jackson proudly announced on the social network that his mother had stolen him a new shirt
Tevon is bang to rights, eh. Well, no. The photo of his “momma” is very much like this photo the Oakland Press published in 2010 of riots following white police officer Johannes Mehserle’s conviction for involuntary manslaughter. He shot and killed unarmed black man Oscar Grant. Mehserle claimed in court that he had thought he had reached for an electric Taser. He got the gun.
So. To talk about Superstaorm Sandy mayhem, the Mail finds an old photo of a black woman. It then uses a black colloquialism (mamma) to lead its story of heinous crime. Anyone else pick up a whiff of something bigoted?
But, then, the Oakland Press also failed, maybe. The Sydney Morning Herald’s Ben Grubb says the photo of the black woman with the shirt was first published on the internet back in 2005. He provies no link. But teh AP has this photo from 2010:
A protestor carries a mannequin from a Sears store window in Oakland, Calif., after a guilty verdict for Johannes Mehserle, Thursday, July 8, 2010. Former San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer Johannes Mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Los Angeles for shooting unarmed black man Oscar Grant on New Year’s Day 2009 at a BART station in Oakland.
