When I first came across this story ( in an online appeal for his freedom), he was described as an SAS medic. Interesting how his role has changed. Is it just me, or would the gun and bullets have made a useful contribution to the SAS’s covert ops armoury.

I think the point is that if his intention was to have the gun deactivated then he wouldn’t need any bullets never mind 308.

how are the bullets supposed to be relevant, Anorak? unless it is purely with regard to lack of attention to detail on the part of the reporters concerned? I agree with Stig that they have no relevance in relation to his supposed “crime”. Personally I am more interested in the fact that yet another member of the judiciary seems to be completely devoid of common sense….

They are not relevant.

Let us suppose I post an envelope to your home that is stuffed with cocaine and some small plastic bags.

I inform the police you have drugs on the premises and are a dealer. They break into your house and find the unopened envelope inside the front door. You then get arrested and are charged.

The plastic bags don’t matter. They don’t imply or prove intent on your part in the context of how that envelope came to be where it was. How the envelope came to be in your house and your knowledge/ownership of it is what would/should matter.

The bullets are relevant, though. The man was wronged. But why does the Mirror not mention the bullets at all?

You know what should be a more serious crime than possessing a prohibited firearm – not possessing some common sense, Anorak.

The bullets are of no significance in the greater context of the story. You should call them Schrodinger’s bullets. Whether an unopened container has these within – or not – matters not at all in the context of an obvious lack of criminal motive or intent on the part of Nightingale.
