Whites in Zimbabwe

ZIMBABWE, formerly Rhodesia, was once ruled by a foreign-born white elite. After independence from Britain, President Robert Mugabe moved to grab the land from white farmers, some of whom had been there for generations. There was more bloodshed. These photos tell some of the story:

** FILE ** In this file photo dated Nov. 9, 2008, a Zimbabwean opposition supporter calls for President Robert Mugabe to step down from office, at a SADC extraordinary summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. In an interview broadcast late Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, Nobel peace laureate Desmond Tutu told Dutch current affairs show Nova that Mugabe has to leave office, if not voluntarily then by a military intervention from his African neighbors. A call for military intervention from a peace activist like Tutu appeared aimed at drawing attention to the desperation in Zimbabwe, a once-prosperous nation of 10 million which has spiraled into an ever-deepening crisis since Mugabe disrupted the economy by seizing land from white farmers in 2000.
