IN Mali, the fighting is brutal:

The crowd gawked at human torso remains lying in the rubble, along with other fragments of flesh. “It’s disgusting but wonderful to see. These people tortured us, they did nothing but damage here,” said Mahamane Tandina, 24, cheered on by the crowd. “We like this, frankly,” he said with a smile.

In this Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 photo, mourners from the Dawa sect gather for the burial of nine Mauritanian Muslim preachers killed last week in neighboring Mali, at a cemetery in the Riad neighborhood of Nouakchott, Mauritania. The nine were part of a group of 16 preachers who were traveling by truck from Mauritania to Mali for a religious conference. All 16 as well as their driver were gunned down by Malian soldiers at a checkpoint in the central Malian town of Diabaly. Early reports indicate that the long-bearded preachers were mistaken for the jihadists who took over Mali's north in April, imposing Shariah law and recently threatening to advance on Bamako, the Malian capital.
