The Chromodoris reticulata sea slug grows a new penis at least once a day
THE Chromodoris reticulata sea slug grows a new penis every day. After sex, the penis drops off, replaced by a new one.
“The penis just falls off,” researcher Ayami Sekizawa told Discovery News.
These animals are “simultaneous hermaphrodites,” meaning each performs both the “male role” of donating sperm to a mating partner and the “female role” of receiving sperm from the partner simultaneously during copulation.
They… “project” their penises and each insert them into the other’s vagina and start copulation. After a short time, one removes its penis from the partner. Later, the other mate removes its penis too.
The slugs then crawl off, dragging their flaccid penises behind them. The organs then fall off, floating into the sea (note to Tesco and Findus: get your ready-meal nets and catch seme ‘crab sticks’).
Says one Jewish sea slug: “You should see the medical bills.”
